ENHANCING SCIENCE LITERACY AND GREEN BUILDING CONCEPT-BASED SCHOOLS THROUGH THE UTILIZATION OF USED PLASTIC BOTTLES AS VERTICAL GARDENS

Abstract

Plastic waste that is considered useless is often thrown into the environment by society. Waste reduction can be done by making vertical gardens from used plastic bottles as a creative and innovative effort to reforest and preserve the environment. SDN Puncu 1 is a school with narrow green land, minimal school gardens, and lack of vegetation so that the school becomes dry and arid. This problem can be solved by using green building concept. The scientific literacy of students in Indonesia needs to be addressed immediately. Reported to the OECD (2016) the literacy rate of Indonesian students is still low compared to other countries. One of the schools with low scientific literacy is SDN Puncu 1. The method of implementing this program is carried out with the stages of preparation, introduction, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The activity involved students and teachers at SDN Puncu 1. The activity was carried out well and smoothly. The success of this program implicate by there is an increase in scientific literacy from an average literacy value of 40 to 85 as well as student and teacher responses stating that the program is satisfactory and useful.
